1. County Dublin is the third-smallest county in Ireland but a third of the country’s population lives there.
Yes, that’s right. Dublin is jam packed full of interesting and diverse people. Its currently population is approximately 1.45 million.
2. And there is a lot of young people.
In fact, Dublin has the youngest population in all of Europe. Approximately one third of the population are under 25-years of age.
3. The name ‘Dublin’ comes from an Old Irish Gaelic phrase ‘Dubh linn’ that translates to “Black Pool”.
4. Dublin was recognised as an UNESCO city of literature in 2010.
The prestigious title recognises the city’s cultural profile and international standing as a city of literary excellence. It highlights the rich historical literary past of the city as well as the vibrant contemporary literature scene today. Dublin was the fourth city worldwide to de designated the title.
5. Guinness is brewed in Ireland, and will continue be for many years to come…
You may already know that Guinness is brewed in the renowned Guinness Brewery at St James’s Gate while It’s headquarters The Guinness storehouse is also located there and is one of the cities major tourist attractions. But did you know that company holds a one of a kind 9000-year lease for the property which does not expire until 10759.
6. And the Irish drink plenty of it.
Almost 1 in 2 pints consumed in Ireland every day is a pint of Guinness, to be precise.
7. Love is in the air
Dublin is not short of romance. Of particular note is Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church located on Aungier Street. This is where the remains of St Valentine, the patron saint of love are stored. You can visit the church and even light a candle at the shrine of the patron saint. Furthermore, just moments from The Morgan hotel, you will find Love Lane in Temple Bar. Commissioned by Dublin City Council, this laneway is adorned with love letters to Dublin, words of famous writers and witty ceramic tiles. If you’re looking, for a romantic getaway, Dublin city is all loved up.
8. There’s lots of green spaces - including Europe’s largest city park.
The Phoenix Park located in Dublin 8, is an impressive size of 707 hectares which makes it the largest city park in the world after Central Park in New York. The park offers a range of attractions including the major tourist attraction Dublin Zoo. It is also home to Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of The President of Ireland.
