National Gallery of Ireland

After his visit to a mesmerizing exhibition at Crystal Palace in London, William Dargan approached the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) in 1852 with hopes of creating his own incredible exhibition. Thus, he founded the National Gallery of Ireland, home to some of the most incredible works of art and sculpture in the country. Located off Merrion Square, the National Gallery is just a 12-minute walk from The Morgan Hotel. Head to our special offers page before booking your stay, to see our full range of packages.

A mixture of pieces from both Irish and international artists and sculptors, the gallery runs a number of limited exhibitions and collections annually, celebrating a particular artists life, or a particular period in art history. The Irish people took a great liking to the arts very quickly, though the gallery was disbanded for a short period of time before its re-establishment in 1864. Roman paintings, along with loans from the London National Gallery, were hung on display when it was re-opened. Over the last 120 years, exquisite donations have been gifted to the gallery. Over the years, it has been extended to accommodate many exclusive designs and beautiful, historical pieces.

Admission to the permanent collection is free to the public, though entry into certain exhibitions will require booking. You can book a guided tour of the collection or take some time out of your Dublin break to wander the galleries. Tickets for specialist exhibitions can be booked in advance, or at the museum. If you need help booking, don't hesitate to ask our reception team. If you find yourself needing some refreshments during your visit, the Gallery Café serves breakfast and light lunch options, as well as tea, coffee & cakes, throughout normal gallery hours.

Shutdown of the galleries begins 15 minutes before closing time.

Learn more about the history behind the artwork through a free tour or take one of the guided speciality tours throughout the year. Visit their 'what's on' page to see what events are planned for the future.

It is well worth a visit if you want to see priceless collections and beautiful paintings. There are many conservation projects and education programs for you to learn about and new installations to explore. A visit to the National Gallery will appeal to all ages. For children and young teens, there are free workshops offered and a children's audio guide. There are also adult workshops available, to help improve your drawing skills.

Be sure to visit The National Gallery's website to see what exhibitions will be on during your visit to the city.

Please refer to the National Gallery of Irelands website for the most up to date information on pricing and opening hours.
