Did you ever wonder who gets to test the beds for a hotel?

Too soft, too hard, just right. The trespassing adventures of Goldilocks are probably our first introduction to not only casual breaking and entering, but also the importance of a comfortable bed. However, long before the blonde housebreaker was on the scene, it has been human nature to seek out the cosiest conditions to guarantee a good night’s sleep.

We all have our personal preferences, but with a hotel accommodating thousands of people a year, how do they get something that keeps the vast majority of people happy and well rested?

For the Morgan Hotel in Dublin City centre, the pressure of such an enormous responsibility falls on the shoulders of Declan Curtis, the general manager of Dublin’s newest 4* star hotel. With the hotel undergoing extensive redevelopment in the early part of 2018, Declan has overseen a project that will see the hotel expand hugely with the addition of 38 new rooms and provide a cocoon of relaxation in the centre of Dublin city.

So how does he go about making this crucial decision?

‘I hop onto the mattress and try it out. If I think it has a quality and restful feel, it goes on the shortlist. There’s not much science to it. I have to be honest, it’s not the most difficult of days someone will have at work!’

So what are the main considerations that go into buying bed for 168 hotel rooms?

‘I know what I like when it comes to mattresses, but when I’m looking at the options, I need to put that to one side and think about what other people like. Broadly speaking, people like a mattress that is soft up to a point, but then has enough firmness to provide support.’

The Morgan’s reopening is based around providing a sophisticated and cultured place to stay at the centre of Ireland’s lively capital city. That’s also something the Declan factors into his considerations.

‘I’m very conscious that with the hotel being located at the heart of Dublin’s busy cultural heart, it’s vital that guests are provided with a serene environment where they recharge their batteries each night. You’ve gotta have a good night’s sleep if you’re going to make the most of what Dublin has to offer, so I spend a lot of time making sure I get it – in the immortal words of Goldilocks - just right.’

With the Morgan Hotel’s Book Direct and Save offer, you can sample the comfort for less.
